Learning Goals for a UKG (Upper Kindergarten) students. These goals outline what students should be able to learn or do during the academic year. They serve as a roadmap for teachers and parents to guide learning progress

Learning Goals – UKG Class (Ages 5–6 Years)

English Language

Students will be able to:

Identify and write uppercase and lowercase letters (A–Z)
Understand and correctly use articles A/An
Identify and name objects related to letters (e.g., A – Apple, B – Ball)
Understand the concept of One–Many (dog/dogs, toy/toys)
Recognize and produce rhyming words (cat–hat, sun–fun)
Use appropriate grammar structures in sentences:

  • This–That, These–Those English Language
  • Am–Is–Are
  • Its–Their, We–Our–They–Their
  • Yes–No responses
  • Prepositions: In, On, Under, Over

Read and distinguish between vowels and consonants
Build and read vowel words (CVC words: cat, pin, mug)
Use adjectives to describe nouns (e.g., red apple, big ball)
Participate in story time, retelling stories using pictures or actions
Read simple words and sentences independently
Engage in social conversations (e.g., greetings, self-introduction, asking for help)
Practice English through flashcards, oral interaction, written work, storytelling, enactment, and worksheets
Form sentences using visual prompts and position words (e.g., The cat is on the mat)

Mathematics

Students will be able to:

Understand and demonstrate pre-maths concepts like:

  • Big–Small, Full–Empty, Heavy–Light, In–Out, More–Less, Tall–Short, etc.

Count, read, and write numbers from 1 to 100
Perform 1-digit addition and subtraction using objects or without visual aids
Identify before, after, and between numbers (within 1–100)
Perform forward and backward counting up to 100
Recognize and use mathematical symbols like >, <, =
Recognize and write number names from 1 to 50
Use and understand the concept of money (identification of coins/notes)
Solve picture-based addition and subtraction
Use objects for hands-on math practice
Practice skip counting by 2s and 5s
Recognize and name shapes: Circle, Square, Rectangle, Triangle, Oval, Diamond, Semi-circle
Identify and sort colors and their shades (light/dark)

General Awareness

Students will be able to:

Talk about themselves and their family (Myself, My Family, My Home)
Identify body parts and sense organs
Recognize and describe seasons, weather, and natural elements (land, water, air)
Understand means of transport and where they are used
Identify different types of animals:

  • Wild, Domestic, Pet, Farm

Know animal sounds and baby animals (e.g., cow–moo, cat–kitten)
Understand the importance of school, home, and surroundings
Participate in class discussions about festivals, nature, and daily life

Hindi Language

Students will be able to:

Recognize, read, and write Swar (अ–अः) and Vyanjan (क–ज्ञ)
Learn and apply maatraa knowledge (क + आ = का)
Read and write words with 1 or 2 maatraas
Identify sanyukt akshar (joined letters)
Match letters with pictures, and form basic two-letter and three-letter words
Practice oral and written expression in Hindi

Rhymes (English & Hindi)

Students will be able to:

Recite and perform 10–12 English rhymes with expressions (e.g., Baa Baa Black Sheep, Incy Wincy Spider)
Recite and enjoy 10–12 Hindi rhymes related to animals, festivals, family, and everyday life
Understand rhyme themes and follow along with actions and gestures
Improve language fluency, memory, rhythm, and pronunciation

Social, Emotional & Motor Development

Students will:

Show confidence in daily communication and classroom activities
Follow classroom rules, routines, and instructions
Work independently and as part of a team or group
Express needs and feelings clearly
Demonstrate fine motor skills in writing, coloring, and craft work
Improve gross motor skills through indoor and outdoor play (running, jumping, balancing)
